Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer hot meals?

We do not! All of our meals are delivered frozen to preserve peak freshness and flavor. As any chef will tell you, a meal is at its best the moment it has been prepared, and so that’s when we freeze it.

Can items be microwaved/cooked in the oven?

Absolutely! All of our meals can be cooked in a microwave or oven, although we recommend an oven for the best home-cooked flavour. You can find the cooking instructions for each meal and/or dessert under the 'Cooking Instructions' tab once you’ve clicked on a specific item on the website.  Once you’ve placed your order and received your meal, be sure to check the label as a reminder of the cooking instructions.

Do I need to thaw my meals?

All soups and entrées need to be cooked directly after being taken out of the freezer. Most desserts, however, should be thawed.

Do I take the film off of my meal before cooking?

Do not remove label before cooking. Pierce seal only if indicated on the package’s cooking instructions.

When will my order arrive?

Once your order has been received, we will contact you to confirm a delivery date and time. Generally, once you have been given a delivery day and time for your first order, it will then become your regular slot--no need to switch up your schedule every week!

How do I search for meals that fit within my particular diet?

When you browse through our meals you will see 'Diet Codes' and 'Made Without' filters.  Use the Diet Code filter to browse meals that are, for example, low in saturated fats or high in fibre. Use the 'Made Without' filters to browse meals that are, for example, made without eggs or milk.

How much sodium do I really need?

No matter what our health concerns are, our bodies need some sodium to function well. Health Canada recommends that most people should not exceed 2300mg of sodium per day (1500mg per day is a healthier upper limit for seniors.) If you’re having trouble keeping sodium in check, look for meals that are low in salt but high in flavour. Meals that contain 140mg or less of sodium per 100g are categorized under “Special Diet: Low Sodium” on the website or marked with a blue circle in the printed menu. Be sure to also check with your healthcare professional to ensure you are meeting your individual nutritional requirements.

Why are Omega-3 fats so important and how can I get enough?

Omega-3s can help prevent and manage heart disease as well as bolster brain function. Most people know that Omega-3 fats are found in fish—but not all fish are rich sources of these fats. Salmon is extraordinarily high in Omega-3s (as well as low in mercury), which is why Heart to Home Meals offers so many delicious salmon dishes. Health Canada recommends two servings of fatty fish per week, so dig in and enjoy… your heart and mind will thank you! Be sure to also check with your healthcare professional to ensure you are meeting your individual nutritional requirements.

Should I be “counting carbs”? And how many do I need?

Carbohydrates are the primary energy source for the brain and the fuel that keeps our bodies active. When it comes to “counting carbs”, aim for about 200g daily (diabetics may have a lower number). Whether or not you’re diabetic, it’s wise to spread carb intake out through the day to maintain blood sugar stability. Heart to Home Meals provides the nutritional information on all of our meals so you can easily track your daily intake. Look for the CarbControl™ category online, or items marked with a pink circle in our printed menu. Be sure to also check with your healthcare professional to ensure you are meeting your individual nutritional requirements.

How much protein do I need per day?

Seniors have a higher need for protein to help repair and maintain muscle tissue and to aid in skin wound healing. The math usually equals out to 1 to 1.2g of protein for each kilogram of bodyweight. Thankfully, some of our most popular meals are packed with protein. Look for the ProteinAssist™ category online, or items marked with a navy blue circle in our printed menu. Be sure to also check with your healthcare professional to ensure you are meeting your individual nutritional requirements.

Why is fibre so important?

Some seniors can experience constipation because of lifestyle, diet and/or medications. The antidote is to keep active, drink enough fluids and make higher fibre food choices. Female seniors need 21g of fibre per day while males need 30g per day. Look for the high fibre category online, or items marked with a brown circle in our printed menu. Be sure to also check with your healthcare professional to ensure you are meeting your individual nutritional requirements.

Is there any room for sweet treats in my diet if I’m diabetic?

Everyone deserves a little treat now and then! For non-diabetics, I recommend working in some desserts that also have nutritional value. For seniors with diabetes, there is still room for dessert—as long as it fits into your daily carbohydrate allotment. You can also choose no-added-sugar desserts. Look for the “No Added Sugar” category online, or items marked with a red circle in our printed menu. Be sure to also check with your healthcare professional to ensure you are meeting your individual nutritional requirements.

Are the trays recyclable?

The short answer is yes! To go into more detail, our entrée packaging carries the recycle code #1, our soup bowl carries code #5, and the dessert pot has either recycle code #2 or #6. In most municipalities, these can be placed in your recycling bin.

Do I have to be a senior to order?

Absolutely not! Our meals are designed to meet the nutritional needs of seniors, however we create delicious products that everyone of all ages can enjoy.

What is the 'Made Without' distinction?

'Made Without' means that the product was not intentionally formulated containing that ingredient. It is not in the ingredient list, however there could still be a potential for cross contamination throughout the process.

Are the meals 'fully cooked' or 'pre-cooked'?

Our meals are not ready to eat or fully cooked.  They are ‘Ready to Cook’.  This means they require being cooked from frozen in accordance with the cooking instructions outlined on the label.  The products must be heated to an internal temperature of 74 degrees Celsius.

Does ‘Made Without Gluten’ mean ‘Gluten Free’?

We have products that fall under both distinctions in our facility, however the terms are not interchangeable.  Here are the details under each.

Made Without Gluten Means: The product was not intentionally formulated with gluten-containing ingredients. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that the product is entirely free from gluten. There might be a possibility of cross-contamination during processing, where traces of gluten could be present in the final product. Therefore, while it is suitable for many individuals who may be avoiding gluten for preference or mild intolerance, it might not be safe for those with celiac disease or severe gluten sensitivity.

Gluten-Free Means: Our facility is not a gluten-free facility, but we do have measures in place to ensure there is no cross-contamination in some of our meals, and these measures get validated periodically to ensure we meet the standards. These standards typically require that the finished product contains less than 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten. They are generally considered safe for individuals with celiac disease or severe gluten intolerance.  These gluten-free meals can be found under our Special Diets and Gluten-Free menu sections.

Is there MSG in your products?

We do not use any ingredients that contain added MSG. Some of our meals contain other natural sources of glutamates, such as hydrolyzed vegetable protein, soya sauce, autolyzed yeast extracts, tomato juice, et cetera, however we do not add refined or purified MSG to our meals.

Are your meals suitable for my specific diet type or diet restrictions?

Although our diet codes provide a quick and easy way to understand what nutritional benefits a meal offers, we cannot provide recommendations customized to individual dietary needs. We recommend consulting your doctor or dietician for personalized advice tailored to your unique dietary requirements. Our menu features comprehensive nutritional information, and detailed ingredient lists are available on our website, empowering you to make informed decisions.
